The Redheaded Outfielder and Other Baseball Stories

The Redheaded Outfielder and Other Baseball Stories is a collection of Zane Grey short stories about the early days of baseball.  It was published in 1915 and can be read online by clicking here. We are fortunate to have the original magazine publications featuring four of the eleven stories in that anthology which you can read in their entirety by clicking on their names as they appear to the right.

Zane Grey and his brother, R.C. Grey both played professional baseball and their exploits inspired these stories. The cover from one of the magazines in which a story appeared is provided above because it sets the mood for these great tales.  Though Grey had published several articles including the entire Ohio River Valley Trilogy by the time these stories appeared, his career was still in doubt at the time the first of these baseball stories appeared in early 1910.  The novel Heritage of the Desert appeared in Popular Magazine later in 1910 and is credited as the work that made Grey's career turn the corner.
